Darik chuckled as Lanie went back to her chair. "Can ghosts eat I wonder?" he asked her softly. "It's something to think about, is it not?" A brighter smile found it's way onto Darik's face as he took a last drink from his cup. Thinking about something that couldn't possibly be true was one way of getting his mother off of his mind. It made his sadness disappear until he thought about her again.
Darik shook his head. "No, I have Vector manipulation." he admitted to her in a hushed tone. "I can change the direction of literally anything. The wind, the clouds, a car, water, anything." He smirked wide and looked into her eyes with his coal blacks. "I can't see dead people, sadly enough." Truthfully, he actually thought seeing the dead was a strong power if it was used right. She could call the spirits of the dead to attack a powerful opponent, and he wouldn't know what hit him.

"I can't eat, not really. Jade just believes I can. And she sees me how she wants to. She always buys me food when we go places. It makes her feel better if I'm eating and drinking like she is. Makes me seem more alive," Lanie explained.
As she did, Jade's hand tightened around her coffee cup. She didn't like when she had to face the truth of what she was actually doing, and that the cookie and hot chocolate she'd bought Lanie were actually still sitting on the table. She turned to look at the abandoned cup and cookie and then looked back over at her sister, who was no longer holding them like she had imagined. She hated how she did that to herself, distorted what was actually happening to make herself feel better, to make it seem like old times. "Lanie...please," she said in a soft voice, trying not to let it crack.
Seeing her younger sister was something that she loved, but at the same time was very difficult, because she knew she wasn't there in the way that Jade wished her to be. Lanie was so full of life and knew Jade better than she sometimes even knew herself. Sometimes Jade thought she seemed more alive than herself.
She turned to look at Darik again. "Sorry..." she mumbled, before offering a weak smile. "That's really interesting. A quite useful power."

Darik just sat there and listened to Lanie explain that ghosts couldn't eat. Jade looked heartbroken after she explained. He realized that what Jade had with her sister was gone, even if she could see her spirit. Darik wanted to comfort her, to hold her hand or ... something, but he couldn't bring himself to do so. Instead though, he nodded and gave her a comforting smile. It was all he could do at the moment.
"Yeah, it helps when you're about to get ran over by a dodge ram." Darik told her as he remembered the first time he ever used his power. It was out of fear when he pushed that truck away in the other direction, not from anger or will. He felt stupid whenever he told anyone how his powers were activated, so he never bothered anymore.

Darik looked like he wanted to help in some way, but he didn't know how. But the fact that he just listened and didn't press for more information was nice. Jade appreciated it. Her eyes moved to her sister again, who was sitting in the chair at the table, swinging her legs back and forth and actually being quiet for the moment being, looking as if she was in deep thought.
Jade sighed and turned back to Darik. She sometimes wondered whether or not what she had was actually considered a power, or if she was just so crazy that she was susceptible to seeing the dead. Did she deserve to be at Veritas, be treated like the others, as if she'd just randomly developed some random power? It had happened after her sister died.... Were her parents and the countless therapists right? She hated thinking too much about this and she hated how sometimes she was treated as a mental case, but she couldn't let go of Lanie and even if she tried, she didn't think the little girl would leave. Sometimes she felt as if she had more in common with the dead than the living, with all the spirits she encountered.
She raised an eyebrow at Darik. "Whoa," she exclaimed, biting her nails again, a habit she'd developed. "That's how you discovered your powers?" It was funny how it worked. His power could save lives and hers...well, hers was just to view the people who hadn't been saved.

Darik nodded and sighed lightly. "Yeah, though sometimes I vector sleep ..." he admitted to her with a sheepish smile. "I move things around in my sleep, then I wake up to a punch because I made the lamp fall on some guy's head." It was embarrassing when he did that, luckily she didn't have to sleep with him, or in the same room for that matter. "It's a problem I have yet to control."
He looked at her for a moment, recognizing that face some where. "Hey, aren't you on the Veritas swim team?" Darik asked her as a smile formed on his lips. "I go to watch the matches sometimes. You're pretty quick."

"That must be a pain," Jade agreed with a nod, even though it actually seemed kind of comical. "It'd be really cool to see your power in action." She looked around, as if trying to think of a way for him to show her. Although in the middle of a coffee shop wasn't probably the best idea. They weren't supposed to use their powers off school grounds. "It'll probably come with time. That's what the academies are for, I guess." She shrugged. "I have to learn to control mine as well. Sometimes I spend so much time around the dead, I forget the living."
Although it was nice to be talking to somebody who was all flesh and breathing right in front of her. She finished off her coffee and nodded at him, smiling. Talking about swimming always made her pipe up. "Yeah, I am. Thank you." It was nice to receive compliments about her swimming, the one thing that made her feel sane. "Although I wish Spiritus brought a bit more competition sometimes. I'm sick of it being an easy win." For the most part anyway. "Although that Gavin guy...he's a real ass." Darik most likely knew him. He was well known at his school, he made sure of it.

"It's actually really funny the next morning," Darik admitted with a light laugh. "It's nice to know at least the boys in the dorm can laugh off just about anything." It was true. Every morning the boys would laugh off last night as they got ready for school to start. Darik liked that, being in an actual group of people. Besides Silver, those boys were his closest friends.
Darik nodded and sighed lightly at the name. "Yep, Gavin ... the award winning ass of the whole school year." he joked with a smirk. If there was an award like that, Gavin was sure to win it.

Jade grinned. "Well, I'm glad that you're able to laugh at yourself and at your power," she told him. She was glad that she'd met someone else who could see spirits besides her. It was reassuring that maybe she wasn't crazy.
"My roommates are pretty great too. Both in different ways," she said with a nod of her head, thinking of Silver and Aela. They were accepting of her for the most part. And then she had her swim teammates, although something seemed off about Aura lately.
She tried not to get too lost in her thoughts and rolled her eyes as they talked about Gavin. "Yep, that's him. I swear he's the spawn of evil."
Lanie nodded firmly in agreement from where she sat in her chair. She finally spoke up as well. "He just looks mean. I get a bad feeling from him and when the spirits do, you know it's bad." She crossed her arms across her chest.
Jade laughed. "She's been to quite a few of my swim meets to see Gavin."

"Roommates ... hey aren't Silver and Aela in your dorm?" Darik asked her as he rested his head in his hand. Silver mentioned her new roomy to him. She said that this girl could probably control spirits if she wanted to. Darik chuckled at Silver's comment running through his head.
He nodded and sighed. "Thank god I haven't thrown a lamp or alarm clock at him in my sleep yet." Darik admitted to her softly. If he did that, it'd be like that chick who decided to piss Oce off. A living nightmare until graduation, and that was something he didn't want.
Darik looked over to where he heard Lanie. "Bad vibes, it's not good for the concentration really." he joked with a light smirk. He looked back at Jade and laughed. "Must be bad to be around that ass while competing." It was true. Even though Veritas won every time, Gavin kinda put them down or something. (Sorry, I'm chewing out bad things about your char ^_^')

"Yeah, they're my roommates. Do you know them?" Jade asked, cocking her head to the side in interest. Both of the girls were very different, but she enjoyed both of their personalities for different reasons. "I was lucky not to get roommates that were freaked out by my ability."
She wrinkled her nose as they spoke about Gavin. "He's really just a self-absorbed creep in my opinion although Lanie claims there's something really dark about him." She shrugged, seeing her younger sister, cross her arms and glare at her from where she sat in her chair.
"He is!" she argued.
"Anyway, we win every time anyway, despite how much of an asshole he is." She smiled at the thought of continuously showing up Gavin and his Spiritus swim team.
She stared at the door. "I know we're at different schools, but you wanna get out of here?" It was getting a little too loud in Tim Horton's for her taste anyway. Ugh, the living.

"Yeah, I know them. They're two of my closest friends." Darik replied to her with a soft smile. "Never would've met any others if it wasn't for Silver." The thought of that memory made hu=im chuckle. In order to get Darik out of his shell a little, Silver made a whole crowd of powers surround them. He made some friends that day, like Aela and Byron.
A soft laugh escaped him as he heard Lanie. "Well," he began, "if it's what she believes, then so be it." Darik nodded and stood up with her.
"It'd be nice to get out of here, I agree." Darik smiled and stretched some. Just when he was about to walk out the door, however, a red mustang pulls up to Tim Horton's and began to fire bullets from a small, but rather deadly, pistol.
"Get down!!" A man screams before everyone ducks except for Jade and Darik. Darik's eyes darted to a bullet that was coming straight towards Jade. Fear struck in his stomach and he focused all his energy on that little bullet, changing it's direction before it went through Jade's chest.

Jade grinned. It was cool that Darik interacted with people from Veritas even though he was from Spiritus. He didn't seem to care much for the school competition thing and neither did Jade, except when it came to swimming and people who thought they were elite like Gavin Maddox for instance. "Yeah, Silver's very....out there." She laughed. She didn't know how else to describe the girl. She was hilarious to be around.
She got up and grabbed her pea coat, buttoning it over her black ruffled dress as they exited the coffee shop. She knew Lanie would follow them. She had no reason to stay at Tim Horton's.
"I'm really glad you spoke to me. It's nice to talk to someone who doesn't think I'm a freak for talking to the dead. I mean, it's my power. I didn't choose it and I'm happy to be able to see my sister anyway." It meant more to her than anybody could possibly imagine. She was about to say something more when she heard yelling and before she could react she heard Lanie's voice pierce the air. "Jade!"
She heard gun shots and panic rose in her chest as she waited for pain that never came, realizing she'd squeezed her eyes shut. She opened them and looked down at herself. She wasn't bleeding...

Darik forced all of his strength to stop that bullet from going through her, and it finally took it's tool. He collapsed onto his knees as the bullet fell to the ground, only going a little ways in the opposite direction from it's previous direction towards Jade. "That was .... way to close ..." he huffed out as he tried to get his energy back. God damn was he exhausted! It's like he just played a full game of soccer without any breaks, he would know, he did it before because of a dare ... and he ended up passing out in the middle of the field.
Darik looked back up at Jade and smiled weakly. "Still got it," he said to her with a light chuckle before standing up and leaning against a table. "I didn't think I could stop that from ... from ... hitting you." He almost started crying, he really did. The one person who accepted him for who he was right off the bat, and she almost died. Right there, right in front of him. Oh Darik wanted to hug her, but he resisted that urge and instead gave her a kind smile.

Jade turned and watched as Darik collapsed to the ground. The car that had shot at them had sped away and left them there along with people around them looking stunned. Nobody understood how it had happened and they were all staring at Darik and Jade with wide eyes. They weren't supposed to use their powers off of campus, but did it count if Darik had been saving her life?
"Jade!" It was her sister again. "You're okay! I....why did they shoot at you? And did Darik....? Dairk saved you!"
Jade helped him stand up, letting him lean on her. Her mind was still reeling from how fast that had all happened. It had taken the energy out of him so quickly. She didn't know how he could be joking at a time like this, but she forced a weak smile as well. "You need to sit down," she told him, helping him over to a table that was outside of Tim Horton's. "We also should get out of here soon, before too many people start asking questions." She said the last thing in more of a whisper.
She was still breathing when that bullet was meant for her. She stared at the ground, her eyes landing on the bullet which had landed there, never connecting with her chest and walked over slowly, picking it up in her hands and twisting it in her fingers before shoving it in her coat pocket. Why she wanted to keep the thing that almost killed her, she didn't know, but she sat down across from Darik, still unable to comprehend it all.
"I....I didn't know there were drive-bys in Cranbrook," she said, her voice a bit unsteady.

Darik nodded and followed her out. Everything suddenly became a tad dizzy, so he leaned on her a bit to keep him from keeling over or something equally embarrassing. He watched her pick up the bullet, and wondered why in the hell she wanted to keep something that almost took her life, but he didn't ask anyway. Why she wanted it was her business, not his.
The world became straight and normal again as he sat down across from Jade. It was the most craziest thing that just happened right then. One moment they were just idly chatting, and next thing you know his new friend almost died. Funny how that happens in 5 minutes. Darik sighed and looked back up at Jade, who was just as surprised as he was about the drive-by. "Truthfully," he finally said after regaining his voice, "I didn't know either ... they might have had drugs or to much alcohol or ... something." Darik stopped talking to listen for Lanie's voice, wondering if she wanted to say something about the random shooting.
