Amelia Leighton Hill made her bed quickly and walked across the room, quietly opening the dormitory door. The floor was dark and quiet, the music she'd heard earlier gone. She pulled the door shut and quietly made her way down the hall, wrapping her arms around her chest. She was nervous and anxious, a bit unsure of what to do. She couldn’t just lie around though-- she had to do something. Amelia hated it when she couldn't sleep.
She walked down the steps slowly and cautiously in the dark, silently praying she didn’t trip and tumble. The last thing she needed was to fall down a flight of stairs and wake up the entire school. The second floor was dark also but she could faintly hear the sound of water running in one of the bathrooms. She continued down the stairs carefully, pausing when she got to the bottom floor.
The bottom floor was dark, except for a subtle glow coming from somehwere. Amelia walked slowly toward it and heard the sound of stuff shifting, a door closing. She stopping abruptly, her light brown eyes widening at the sight in front of her.
Someone was standing in front of her. She didn’t recognize the person but knew immediately it had to be a student. The moment Amelia's eyes landed on them something sparked inside of her, something baffling and unexpected. She was stunned and frozen in place, unable to think or act. She knew it was utterly ridiculous and stupid to be afraid of getting caught sneeking around school after dark by another student.

His doctor called it insomnia. Talon called it a fear of the nightmares that haunted him every time his eyes closed. Either way, it meant he could not, would not, dared not sleep. Not until he was forced to take a sleeping pill or until he was so exhausted he could barely move and fell asleep somewhere random like the commons floor or somewhere in the forest or in class, anyway.
Students were not supposed to go midnight wandering around the school after lights out, but since when did Talon listen to the rules? He knew if he was caught it would be added to his detentions. He was still serving his three week lunch detention from the time he was caught with a cigarette in his mouth. He had been on his way outside, not planning to light up until he was through the front doors, but of course a teacher happened by and bam! A three-week detention was slapped in his face. Not literally, but still. It sucked, because he was forced to sit still and eat lunch for an hour in between classes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday lunch. And sitting still made him restless. It was like torture, and it was just as bad as sleeping. He did not like it when his mind wandered, so the only detentions he could actually stand were the ones where the teacher spoke to him (which he ignored, but at least their voice was annoyingly distracting enough to break him out of his thoughts), or when other students joined him in detention. Talon dislike other students, or at least he pretended to, so he ignored them as well. But again, their presence was usually distracting enough.
He wandered the corridors, flicking his lighter on and off, his bare feet padding softly against the tiled school floors. He wore his pyjama bottoms and that was about it. His cigarette pack was in the pocket of his pants. He planned to light up a cigarette later, perhaps in one of the classrooms. It was too cold outside and teachers did not exactly wander the corridors. The only way he would be caught out of bed would be if he made too much noise and/or a night-time custodian found him. But he generally knew their routes. You were safe if you picked an empty, clean classroom. He peeked into one of the science rooms and flicked on the light. I was clean, but he didn't like the science rooms. There was too much stuff to potentially break and draw attention to. He would find another. He flicked out the classroom light and let the door close softly behind him as he turned back around. He nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw a figure standing there in the dark. It was a girl. Another student. "Jesus," he breathed, pulling out a smoke right then and there. "You scared the shit out of me!" he accused, glaring at her and wondering why she was even down there. Had she been following him or something? He stuck the cigarette in his mouth but hesitated lighting it. What if she was some teacher's pet who would tell on him or something? He didn't want to get stuck with even more detentions.

The first thing Amelia noticed was that he didn’t have a shirt. She could make out the muscles in back and arms, and his slightly broad shoulders. He shut the classroom door and turned slightly, so Amelia could easily see his stomach was toned. This guy, whoever he was, was deffiantly a swimmer. The person standing in front of her was mesmerizing. Amelia was an average 15-year old girl who knew gorgeous when she saw it. "Jesus, you scared the shit out of me!" She felt utterly ridiculous and stupid, just standing there. She exhaled sharply, her chest hurting. She hadn’t realized she’d been holding her breath. "I am no cat, I don't need to wear a bell to announce my arrival." Amelia Whispered, her voice trembling. Her gaze lifted slowly up to the cigerette and cocked an eyebrow, her face shifting through numerous different emotions. Disbelief. Shock. Confusion.

Talon smirked at the girl's response and proceeded to light his cigarette, deciding he would risk detention. She looked terrified to have run into him, so he could only assume she wasn't meant to be out here either. The first drag was always the best, and so he closed his eyes as he inhaled. When he exhaled he felt disgusted, as he always did. The first drag was only the best because it satisfied his addiction. After that, he merely felt revolted at the fact that he was smoking. But he was addicted and he was hoping it would kill him. So far his doctors told him his lungs were healthy (a statement of course followed by them urging him to quit, anyway, and them bringing up his sister. Followed by Talon storming out of the doctor's office in a huff). So far.
"That's true. Plus I'm sure you wouldn't want to be wandering around in the dark with a bell around your neck, anyhow," he stated. "That would surely draw the custodians' attention." He took another drag, and held his breath until his lungs burned before exhaling slowly and then breathing in actual oxygen.

Amelia shrugged nervously. "I don't know, I think I would look good as a kitten." She paused, a slightly confused look on her face, which turned into a smile after a second. "What is that you are smoking?" Amelia asked, looking all innocent and wide-eyed. It smelt like normal tobacco, but then Amelia had learnt never to trust her instincts around here. Things were not always what they seemed to be. You never knew what power someone wielded. This guy could have some lame power of being able to change the smells of things. Instead of tobacco it might of been weed. What Amelia would give to be stoned right now!
"Somehow I don't think I would be in any trouble if the custodians did happen to be drawn down here. However, I don't fancy using my powers just to save our backsides," She glanced up and the smoke alarm to make her point, "so how about we go into the Science lab there and you can two'es me on that cig?" Amelia stammered. She tried to get her thoughts in order but his stare had her flustered, embarrassed.

Talon's eyes widened slightly. "Can you turn into animals?" he wondered, his own power triggering his question. He was yet to meet someone at his school with the power to shift. He could turn into birds, but everyone else had very different powers from him. Except for Persy, but she could only control animals. That was different from actually being one.
Talon took his cigarette out of his mouth and looked at it, confused by her question. "Uh, it's just a regular cigarette. You know, tabacco? Lung cancer and all that glorious stuff?" he said sarcastically. What did she think it was? Pot? He almost laughed aloud at the idea. He didn't smoke to get high. He smoked to... well, he didn't quite like to think about it.
She mentioned her powers again and he wondered what they were, but figured there was no point in asking a second time. He had to give her a chance to answer his question from before. He looked up at the smoke alarm and frowned. Could he set it off by smoking under it? At first he stayed put, not wanting to go back into the science lab, but then he remembered there was a good ventilition system in there in order to improve the air quality. All they had to do was turn it on and no alarms would be set off. "Yeah, fine," he gave in, though he wasn't all that into sharing his cigarette. He had already given one person second-hand smoke (or rather, his parents had, but Talon blamed himself as well). He was not about to become responsible for giving someone actual lung cancer. He followed her into the lab.
