AJ laughed at Ashton, at his positive attitude and the dopey grin on his face. He seemed to light up any room and his grin was contagious, somebody AJ could probably use to have around. But she wasn't really negative. No, she didn't consider herself a pessimist. She was simply a realist. And it was realistic that AJ's life was not how she wanted it to be.
"A hot chocolate or an apple-cider sounds good," she said, licking her lips at the thought. She'd have to decide between them and she nodded about the donut thing. "And I definitely can't say no to donuts." She smiled as they'd moved through the door and to the outside.

"Sweet!" Ashton said enthusiastically. "Donuts and a hot drink it is. I wonder what hot chocolate apple cider would taste like," he mused aloud, considering the two choices. Chocolate-covered apples existed, so why not a drink with both chocolate and apples? It sounded delicious, in his opinion.
"Who could say no to donuts?" he pointed out with a flash of teeth. Just then a strong gust of wind blew by them, bringing with it a bunch of leaves that had been piled up at the side of the path. One leaf landed on AJ's face, and Ashton burst out laughing. He lifted a hand to remove it for her, still chortling away at the hilarity of it.

AJ smiled at his randomness, at his thoughts that swirled in his mind and made their way out of his mouth unfiltered. But they were never rude, always just inklings of what went on in that head of his. It was very insightful. She was actually beginning to enjoy herself, laughing as he spoke. "I've never considered that combination before, although I'd assume you could mix them and try it out."
And he was right, donuts were impossible to say no to. She was smiling at this when a leaf blew at her, sticking to her cheek. He laughed and she reached up to remove it, but noticed that he was doing the same thing and she instantly flinched away from him. "Uhh, I got it," she stammered. That wasn't smooth at all! Now it looked like she was trying to stay away from him, well...she was, but it was because of her power.
She tried to mask it with laughter.

"I think I'll do just that," Ashton decided. Experimenting with the drinks would be fun. Perhaps he could invent something new and become famous!
His eyebrows shot up in surprise when she flinched away from him and he watched her, confused. "Uh," he said, not sure what to think of that. He wasn't about to hit her or anything, but she had moved away from him like he was dangerous or something. But when she laughed, he relaxed a little. It was just a reflex, after all, and so he joined in as well. "You should have seen your face," he chortled, kicking a few of the leaves that had blown onto the sidewalk path. "If I had known you felt that passionately about leaves, I wouldn't have bothered," he added teasingly.

AJ laughed along with him because she wasn't sure what else to do. "Sorry. I'm a little jumpy," she offered in explanation pathetically. She mentally kicked herself for what she'd done, but she had to be on guard. She couldn't let him touch her, couldn't let anybody. And with Ashton, she'd already touched him once and she remembered what had ensued.
"Yeah, I bet my face was pretty hilarious. Can't say I'm used to leaves blowing into my face and then cute guys trying to brush them away." Did she really just say that? No, she shouldn't have. God, how annoying it was to actually be among people, especially nice people. She started to let her guard down, started to actually participate in life and become a social creature. She'd craved it for so long because her power had robbed her of it.
She laughed again as they reached Tim Horton's.
