Distinguishing Features» One thing that stands out with Mikayla is that her eyes are always foggy and blank, due to her blindness. See her family history for more information.
Clothes» Since she attends Spiritus, Mik is usually wearing her school uniform. Luckily blue looks good on her. However on weekends and in the evenings she likes to wear pretty casual clothes. Since she cannot see, she does not pay attention to fashion trends and usually asks for help to see if what she chose looks good together, although she has been able to pick out which piece of clothing is which based on touch and the embroidery.

Siblings» Mikayla is an only child. Her parents were planning on having a second child, but after Mikayla's accident they decided it was best to focus all of their attention on her, especially once her powers came into play. She has lots of cousins, however.

Family History» Marie and Billy Karter were high school sweethearts. Billy is from Calgary, Alberta and moved to Longview Alberta where he attended high school and met Marie, who was born in Eden Valley 216, a Nakoda Indian reserve. This makes Mikayla part aboriginal, and she is very proud of her heritage. When her mother was approaching high school, she chose to leave the reserve and attend a highschool nearby where she met and fell in love with Billy Karter. They gave birth to Mikayla and could not be happier. They raised their daughter on their ranch and Mikayla was on the back of a horse before she could learn to walk. However, one summer before she turned ten Mikayla was galloping her horse on her family's land with her cousin when a coyote's howl spooked it. Her horse stopped abruptly and an unexpecting Mikayla flew over his head and into a fence. She was unconcious for three days in the hospital and when she woke she could not see. Doctors tried their best but deduced that her head injury had affected the part of her brain that controls her sight, and she will be blind forever.
Mikayla returned to riding almost immediately, believing strongly in the saying 'if you fall down, get right back on that horse'. Adjusting to her new disability was a struggle at first, but it sooned turned into what Mikayla refers to as a blessing.

Personality» Mikayla at first can be really naive. She was always a really trusting person, and even though her blindness makes her very vulnerable, she still believes there is good in anyone and everyone, even in people who others would immediately find untrustworthy. Her trusting nature coupled with her blindness makes her a target of much ridicule. She is also easy to manipulate.
Mikayla is also very forgiving. You could cheat on her or mess up in any way and she would find it in her to forgive, because she could never hold a grudge. Of course, this does not count for all extremes. If someone were to physically abuse her or something on that level, she would not be all 'Oh hey, forgive and forget'.
Most people, including her doctors, expected Mikayla to spiral into some sort of depressive state once she lost her sight, but it never brought Mikayla down and kept her down. She has her days, but so does everyone. She always likes to look on the brighter side of things. For example, once her powers came she saw her blindness as a blessing. She saw it as trading one sense for another.
She is also very caring, loyal, and a hardworker. She is also very driven; she wants to amount to something and so she tries her hardest with everything she does.
Even though Mikayla is naive, she is no pushover. She does take some caution with people if they have wronged her in the past, but it really depends on the situation. She is a strong individual, using her ability to focus on the bright side to get through tough situations; her accident is proof of that. She is a trooper.
Likes - school, her powers, people, animals, horses, riding, being outdoors, reading (well, listening to audio books), her family
Dislikes - braille (she gave up and turned to audio books because reading braille took too long and was annoying difficult for her), anyone who picks on her for her disability, anyone who picks on anyone else for things out of their control, anyone who picks on anyone, her blindness (while she may view it as a blessing, it does bother her that she cannot see certain things anymore, and at times it really frustrates her), most meat (she is not a vegetarian, but tends to stick to chicken and turkey and ham on holidays just due to personal food preference), silence, cooking (it's really frustrating to try when you can't see!), too much noise, the cold, strong smells, not knowing what people look like

Academics» While her disability causes some trouble in some classes, Mikayla keeps up with mostly A grades and some B's. She really enjoys learning and so she tries her very best. She might not be at the top of her class, but she still enjoys it.
Powers» Atmokinesis aka Weather Manipulation and Control. Basically, Mikayla can control the weather. She can make it rain if she wants, or make the sun come out. However the effects of her powers do not last long as it drains her energy. The longest she has been able to control the weather before exhaustion kicked in was at a rodeo her cousin was participating in. A storm had been scheduled but she used her powers to hold it off until her cousin's round was over. Then the rain poured from the sky as she lifted her power, and she collapsed. She held the storm off for two hours.
Mikayla can also repel weather elements from her skin. For example, if it is raining and she does not wish her hair to get wet, she simply wishes the rain away from her body and it falls all around her, but never once touched any part of her.
Discovery» Soon after her accident, a ten year old Mikayla began to realise that the gorgeous summer weather they were having was no accident. Every time she woke up and it was raining and she had been planning to go for a ride, the rain would clear and the sun would come out and the rain would hold off until she was back in the stables. This happened so many times that she became suspicious of her good fortune. So when the seasons changed and winter hit, cold-detesting Mikayla would walk outside and cringe at the biting wintery air. She would wish it would not affect her... And then it didn't. She was able to even walk outside in a t-shirt in the dead of winter and the cold air did not affect her after a moment. She would walk outside and flinch, and then the cold would be repelled away from her own body from a power deep within her. It took Mikayla a while to realise she had powers, but after mentioning it to her parents one day (and proving it by making it snow in mid-july over their ranch), she had them convinced. It was not until her thirteenth birthday when a storm raged for two weeks* after her horse died that a scout from Spiritus Academy located her and offered her a position at their school in a year's time. Even though Spiritus would not have taken no for an answer, Mikayla jumped at the chance. She liked school, and jumped at the opportunity to go to such a unique place.
*Even though Mikayla has trouble with controlling her powers, when she was driven by her upset, she managed to keep a storm raging only over her house for a fortnight. She had to stay in bed the entire time due to her exhaustion, but at that time that suited her, since she was too busy mourning her horse and preferred to be locked in her bedroom.
Weakness/Vulnerability» There is some of her power weakness outlined under her powers above. I have italicized it. Also, a lot of times her powers are connected to her emotions. When she is brilliantly happy or excited, the sun shines brightly wherever she is. If she is really angry, it becomes dangerously windy. If she is sad, it rains. Etc. Etc.
Her too-trusting nature can really cause some issues, especially if someone is trying to wrong her. Her blindness is her major weakness, of course.
Strengths» Even though she lost one sense (in fact, it could be because she lost one of her senses) Mikayla's other four are stronger. She pays more attention to sounds and smells, and after meeting someone once can pick out their voice in a crowd. She might remember them right off the bat if she only met them once, but she will know she has met them. Her other four senses are not supersonic or anything; she just pays attention to them more now that her brain has given up on seeing.
Her caring nature can also be seen as a strength, because it makes her a very unbiased person and makes her a great friend.
In terms of social situations, Mikayla is very unobjective when it comes to meeting people. She literally cannot judge someone based on their appearance. It's all in the personality when she meets someone.

Relationship Status» She has never had a boyfriend, and the vulnerable part of her believes it could be due to her blindness, even though she tries her best not to focus on the negativities of her disability.
