Wearing multiple layers of fleece pajamas under his casual clothes and coat and several wooly socks inside second hand boots, Kazu couldn't help but curse himself for being so incurably awake at this hour. He had woken up from his self-induced sleeping spell, unsure of what time it was, only that he needed to get dressed and get outside immediately.
It wasn't so much that he was still groggy or confused from the chemicals he took, his inner clock was telling him it had been over a day since his last alignment. Not like he needed a reminder, for he felt like his usual channels were beginning to sludge up. To wake up his fingers in the cold night, Kazu began to craft himself a snowman, whispering words of life and light into the little creature. No sooner had he finishing poking eyes, ears and a mouth into the face, the homunculus drew breath and jerked into awareness. Hollow eyes looked at their Master, and Kazu asked politely if it would accompany him to a quiet place of meditation.
Since it was merely a snowman, it didn't respond, so Kazu set off down a path, packed down to ice from the snow and foot traffic. His buddy kept ahead while Kazu trudged behind, his toes going numb.
Several minutes passed by, which gave Kazu ample time to survey the dark land, check out the moon on it's descent to the horizon, and pack snow into his creature when he began to degrade. Soon the path lead to a little town, but before it was a little park. Metal and plastic play place, swings, a painted merry go round and a baseball diamond just a little further, completely covered by snow. Kazu went to the merry go round and tried to move it, but it was iced over.
His homunculus nudged his pant leg in anxiety, so he tended to his friend. It was clear the snowman was gaining self-awareness and was probably wondering why he was armless, legless, and formed so feebly with a membrane of ice and snow. Kazu patted his friend on the head, but the touch robbed the creature of his life. The snowman stood immobile and Kazu felt a little bit of remorse, never liking to do that but knowing he had to.
However, it freed up his energies. His hands gripped the icy bars and he began to concentrate on the thought of how hot these handles would get if they were in California summer sun. Suddenly the biting freeze on his palms didn't hurt so bad, and steam began to rise as the ice melted away, the metal gaining heat. With a crack, Kazu wrenched the merry go round free from the ice and began spinning it, hopping on and holding tight.
Kazu got to the center of the merry go round where the gravity pull was the least, and sat down, pressing his palms together and going to his mind. It was chaos, but the unsettling motion allowed him to begin chanting the heart sutra, calming the chaos, aligning the tria prima and creating an eerie soundtrack to the silent night.
About two minutes later, the chant was complete and the merry go round was still. Kazu was now awake and electrified, so to speak. His three primes, body, mind and soul were aligned and working in concert, clarity sharpening by the minute. He sat there still in the cold darkness, in the zone and clearing cobwebs from the paths to his inner gates, probing longingly at the ones he hadn't opened yet. He opened his awareness to his surroundings and felt the presence of the metal and the snow, the trees and the bleachers, creatures sleeping in their hidey-holes or flying ahead, looking for breakfast. Something else was there too, indefinable, shrouded. He ignored it and continued his work, speaking quietly to the air.
