Family History» Mariah was born and raised in Southern California, where her family has lived since her parents married. It an odd turn of events, her family has kept the level of dysfunction to a minimum. She maintains a good relationship with her parents, though her brother is somewhat distant. Then again, her brother is somewhat distant from everyone.
As one would expect, it took some time for her family to accept that not only could people have powers, but Mariah herself had powers. They instilled in her from the beginning the idea that this is something she ought to use responsibly, and something that no one outside of the family (and eventually, the school) should know about.

Personality» Mariah is a ray of sunshine. She is ineffably positive and upbeat. The glass is half full, and while she appreciates your opinion to the contrary, things could always be worse. She's optimistic, to say the least, in all ways. A kind and friendly sort, she isn't afraid to strike up a conversation with a stranger. She's almost painfully empathetic, and always willing to lend a friendly ear or a shoulder to cry on. This makes it difficult for her to witness hardship or cruelty; it's what drives her to do good with the abilities she's been given.
That said, her moral compass is a little ambiguous. She recognizes the importance of the law and it's necessity in keeping order. However, she's found that red tape often gets in the way when it comes to getting people the help they need. Mariah would much rather do the right thing rather than the lawful thing, if it came down to it. She's no stranger to trouble, in this regard.
Formality is not her strong suit, and though she shows due respect, her manner of speaking varies little between the people she comes into contact with. Mariah would rather avoid arguments, but she isn't afraid to defend her opinions, even if she isn't the most articulate when angry. One thing she isn't? Patient. Mariah is a girl of action. As in, act now, think later! As one may expect, this has led to some trouble in the past. This goes for speaking-without-thinking, too. Not that any negative repercussions have convinced her to change her ways, of course.
She's got a mischievous streak a mile wide, and her powers certainly aid that. It's always in good fun, and the intention is never to hurt or humiliate.
Likes - Rock music, musicals, a good story, exploration of all kinds, causing mischief
Dislikes - Sitting through classes she has no interest in, downers, sitting still, bullies/mean-spirited people

Academics» Despite getting bored easily when it comes to certain subjects, Mariah is a pretty good student. History and English are her best subjects, with Science a close second. Everything else? B's and C's, generally.
Powers» Teleportation and cognitive spacial awareness. Teleportation is straight forward enough; she can be in one spot one second, and across the room in an instant. Cognitive spatial awareness sort of comes with the territory. It means she is capable of knowing a space is safe to teleport to, even if she's never been to or seen the spot initially. It prevents her from teleporting inside objects, or teleporting into thin air on accident.
Discovery» Mariah was eleven when she discovered she had powers. Flying in the face of everyone's warnings, she opted to try flying her favorite kite from the sidewalk out in front of her house. This was where she ran into trouble. Running down the street at full tilt, the kite slowly gaining lift in her wake, it seemed she might not have an issues. She'd made it halfway down the block, now standing in front of an apartment building. A stray gust of wind dashed the kite off at a hard angle, sending it right into the apartment building's fire escape, where it was very effectively tangled. Not one to despair immediately, even at that age, she assessed the situation. The structure was ancient in appearance, rusted and paint flaking off the rails. Not that that was any sort of deterrent. The worst part was that the bottom ladder was pulled up, out of her reach.
Now that last part, that was terrible. Mariah knew she could reach her kite, if she could just get to that first platform! She knew it would hold her, knew she'd be able to safely get her kite, if she just had the chance. When suddenly, whoomp! A blink and a blur later and she was standing on the first platform of the fire escape, her kite one ladder-climb away. Overjoyed, she disentangled the thing, clambered down the fire escape, and ran off to tell her mom. The rest is history.
Weakness/Vulnerability» Concerning her powers, one of her biggest hangups is distance. She can't teleport too far as of yet; there's a certain radius she's gotten accustomed to, that she can 'port around in without restraint. Pushing beyond it consistently is the only way to expand her limits, but it is physically exhausting. That, and she hasn't quite mastered the cognitive spacial awareness just yet. She obviously hasn't spliced herself in two or anything fatal like that, but it isn't out of the ordinary for her to end up too high above the floor, or in odd places she didn't intend. She even ended up in the space between two walls once. In other words, she misses her mark every now and then.
Personality-wise:
Naive. Just as she considers her empathy to be a strength, one might also count it a weakness. They got a word for that: "sucker". "Bleeding heart" works too. In none so many words, she's easily taken advantage of. Honest to a fault (when it matters), she sort of assumes others mostly are, too. Mariah takes people at face value, and when some people make a living off faking that face value, things get hairy for her. She's been lied to, swindled, tricked, and out-right robbed more times than she can shake a stick at. And it's not like she doesn't recognize this. She isn't a complete idiot! It's worse that she knows there's potential to be taken advantage of, and yet still she gives people the benefit of the doubt. Some say doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is some sort of madness, y'know.
Impulsive. Thinking on ones' feet can be most admirable, but there is a line; she has well and fully crossed it. Her impulsiveness has led her to make some rather rash and out-right bad decisions, and while she deals with it as best she can, much of her own burdens could be alleviated if she simply slowed down and took a second to think.
Strengths»
Focused. Mariah has always found her greatest strength to be her ability to keep a level head and apply her skills and abilities in the absolute worst situations. She did not grow up in a particularly nice area in LA, and she's been in her fair share of bad spots. She's always been able to keep relatively calm and collected in the high-stress situations that came up.
Adaptable. Anyway, one good thing that's come of her "do first think later" attitude is that she is fairly adaptable. It comes with always looking on the bright side; every situation is at least somewhat salvageable, if one is willing to take the time to look. Keep moving forward, don't cry over spilled milk, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade, yada yada and other such inspirational sayings. You get the idea; she takes what she's given and works with it, even when what she's given is less than ideal.
Caring. And of course, depending on how you see things, her empathy is most definitely a great asset. Genuinely understanding another's pain can be endearing, and has made making friends easy in the past! Well, if you suppose making friends and knowing people is a good thing. She's always been of the opinion that we as human beings ought to look out for one another; life ain't easy for anyone, and no one makes it out alive, so we may as well make things easier on each other. Not many would agree. She's a firm believer in karma, though, and the good will she spreads hasn't backfired yet. Well, it hasn't backfired in any detectable way, anyhow.
