Ingrid looked around at the quaint shopping area of town. She saw a bunch of older brick buildings, and even newer ones. In her soft black slacks, and dark brown top, complete with a light brown scarf and black jacket, she fit in with this area nicely. She saw the groups of people with hats, scarves, and gloves, warming themselves over warm drinks and chatting together happily. She sighed, her breath making puffs of white in the air. Shivering slightly, she clutched her papers to her chest, walking briskly, with her boots slapping the ground. Hurrying, she walked to the nearest store she could find, just to get a brief respite from the cold.
Ingrid sighed in relief as she opened the door, and happily stepped inside. It was far too cold to look around outside. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she made out a cozy sitting area, and a counter where a guy stood, a menu behind him. She'd stumbled upon one of the cafes and she smiled gratefully. What a great place to warm up before she had to go out again.

Eager to get out of the cold, Natalie ducked into a cafe that she passed, rubbing her hands together when she entered the warmth of the building. She had a pair of gloves on, but still felt frozen. A knit hat was over her chocolate curls that spilled over her shoulders and she was wearing her favorite forest green pea coat. Yet the cold still affected her.
She'd been at Veritas for a few years now and she was grateful for the escape from her bitter single mother back home in Brooklyn. She'd adjusted to Canada quite well for the most part and mostly kept out of dodge so that she didn't get attached to anybody. Her first semester there, someone who she'd thought was her friend had been using her for her power.
"Oh, you can just shapeshift into me and go to class for me. I really need a nap." As if Natalie wanted to attend their boring classes when she had those of her own to attend. Didn't anybody like her as a person?
She sighed, walking up to the counter and gazing at the menu where a dark haired girl was as well, her cheeks red from the cold. "You're not a fan of winter either?" she asked, trying to make casual small talk. Nothing too serious.

"Oh god, I can't stand being out in these temperatures. I'm Ingrid, by the way. Who are you?" Ingrid shifted where she stood, and looked at the girl. She didn't recognize her from school, but she doubted she'd recognize anyone. After all, she was practically brand new, and she tried to keep her head down as much as possible. No sense in getting attached to anyone, they might have their energy drawn on as well.
"I'm sorry, I'm being terribly rude. How are you?" Ingrid sighed; She knew she had social problems, but no reason to be rude to a stranger. Leaning back against the partition leading into the dining area, she shivered slightly as another person walked in and ordered. Gritting her teeth, she tightened her scarf around her neck and buttoned her coat tighter, effectively creating a barricade from the other girl, not out of rudeness or anything, but for her own safety. She still didn't have much control, and hoped nothing happened to draw attention to herself.

"It's Canada," Natalie replied with a shrug. The winters in New York certainly weren't this cold and she found that it was a lot prettier there with snow, but she'd heard that Canada's winters were harsher. That, and she was still confused on the whole Celsius/Fahrenheit thing.
"I'm Natalie." She didn't see the harm in telling Ingrid her name, especially since she'd told Natalie hers' first. She didn't even know if Ingrid was a Spiritus or Veritas student. She could just be a citizen in Cranbrook who went to a normal high school and had somewhat of a normal life, at least compared to teenagers who attended one of the two schools. Natalie wasn't sure. She couldn't peg her, but she definitely hadn't seen her around Veritas.
"You're not being rude," she assured Ingrid, wondering how the girl got that idea and she simply raised an eyebrow at her before stepping up to the counter and ordering herself a white chocolate mocha. "Trust me, I know rude."

"Sorry, I'm still not really used to being around people. It's always been easier for me to not. Do you go to school around here?" Ingrid knew she had to be careful what she said, but it was just so much easier to hide in plain sight for her, for all she had such an obvious power. At least, when it was used. If only she didn't have to deal with it, her life would be so much simpler.
Ingrid stepped up after Natalie had finished ordering, and ordered a hot chocolate. Caffeine, she had found, heightened her senses, and widened her range of need. Things became very difficult to control. She shook her head. Becoming obsessed with controlling this eliminated her ability to have any other interactions with people, and that meant she had to stop obsessing.
She tightened her scarf again, and stepped away, after grabbing her drink. She walked over to one of the small tables and sat down with a quiet sigh. She took a sip of the scalding liquid, and closed her eyes for a second. Denying everyone in pain, or who was drained at all, was exhausting. It applied to too many people.

Natalie nodded in understanding. She knew how that felt. She stayed away from people because she knew what they were capable of, and that was using her for her power. The idea made her blood boil. "Yeah, I do," she replied, not giving away too much. Did this girl have a power? Is that what she was hinting at? That she went to Spiritus or Veritas? Keeping the secret of these schools was such a bothersome thing, especially when you could be around potential students of those schools.
She waited for her hot chocolate and grabbed the warm cup from the counter with a small nod at the barista. She saw Ingrid take a cup from beside hers and move quickly away to settle down at a table. She hadn't been pushy or annoying and Natalie could appreciate that. So, she found herself making her way over to her and sitting down, dropping her bag on the floor by her feet. She sent a small smile in Ingrid's direction, hoping that she wasn't scaring her off.

Ingrid opened her eyes when she heard someone sit down across from her. She looked up from her drink, and saw the girl.... no, Natalie, sitting across from her. She smiled back slightly, figuring it was time to find out if Natalie was like herself. 'What school do you go to? I'm at Spiritus.' If Natalie was one of them, then she'd get the reference. Otherwise, it'd look like she was attending an ordinary boarding school, if not a strict one. She didn't mind that, it fit her very serious demeanour. She found herself losing her control, and she tightened her hands around her hot chocolate, her eyes glazed over slightly. She needed to keep hold of her power, with little to no training to control it, except to keep it contained. There's a girl outside who fell and broke her wrist, a man who just hit is head, an exhausted woman hurrying home from work, about to collapse. No. None of it matters, just stop.
Ingrid shook her head angrily, to reinforce what she had just told herself, her control temporarily restored. She hoped Natalie didn't think she was too weird for that, though she thought it was only a couple minutes at most. 'So, how are you?'
