A brisk wind cut across the soccer field and up into the stands, blowing Mikayla's long dark hair back and causing tears to sting her eyes. She wiped them away, though she was unbothered by them; she could not see, and so it was not like they were blurring her vision. She had her power turned on, so the cold was not bothering her. She was sure it might be getting to the others on the stands who like her were watching the Spiritus soccer team practise. It was not yet soccer season, as winter was rapidly approaching, but the Spiritus team were winners, and Mikayla knew they took their practise sessions very seriously. Once snow hit the ground, making the field impossible to play on, they would move indoors to practise drills, but it seemed that as long as they could be outside, they would be.
She knew this because her cousin was on the team, and she often watched his practise. Well, she often listened to the practise. However, with the wind whistling in her ears, it was difficult. She used her power to calm the power until the air was crisp and still. And then she waited until the practise was over so she could talk with her cousin.

Mace always played his hardest in scrimmages. He treated them like the real thing. It was good preparation for actual games. He didn't see the point in not trying...well, unless it was homework. But that was a different story. His mind wasn't in the classroom when he was out on the field. One of his team mates poured water over his head and Mace shook it off, his hair spraying it everywhere, before laughing and shoving him.
He grabbed his duffel bag from the sidelines and raced over to the stands, grateful for the crisp, fall air that ran through his hair, making it bearable. He could tell that Mikayla was influencing the weather just enough. He'd already spotted her out there during his practice. He loved when she came to his practices and games. They were fairly close cousins. It was nice to have a girl around after growing up with all of his brothers. They got along well and he tried to pull her into all of his crazy shenanigans. "Mik!" he yelled, bounding up the stands quickly, pulling his bag over his shoulder.

From the sounds of voices drifting away, the practise was over. Mikayla waited until she heard her cousin's familiar voice, then stood up and grinned. "Hey, Mace," she greeted him. "How'd practise go? You guys sounded like you were working hard."
She reached out towards him to hug him, and felt that his shoulder was damp, the liquid seemingly having come from his head. She withdrew from him instantly. "Oh, gross! Is that sweat?" she asked, wrinkling her nose, not having witnessed her cousin's teammate dump the water. "I didn't think you guys put that much effort into your team practises," she teased.

"Well," Mace answered, shrugging. He was big on using gestures over words, which made things a little confusing for Mikayla. "We train hard. Have to continue to kick Veritas' ass!" He grinned and frowned when he withdrew from her, then laughed at her reaction.
"Yeah," he answered, nonchalantly. He ran a hand through his hair, which wasn't really all that sweaty, just wet from the water bottle that had been dumped over his head, but it was too hilarious to see Mikayla's face expression to tell her that it was just water. "I have over-active sweat glands. I sweat buckets!" He couldn't help but continue to grin at his cousin at his false explanation. "I always work hard!"
"Aw, come on!" He held out his arms. "No hug? You don't like man sweat?"

"I guess that's true," she laughed. "It is nice to belong to the school with a killer soccer team. And it's even more awesome when I can say that my very own cousin is a part of that kick-ass team!" She did not understand the strong rivalry between the schools; she thought it to be petty. But the competitiveness when it came to sports was something she could get behind as long as it was good fun. She felt a unity between the schools would be better, especially when it came to missions.
"Bull," she said. "You never sweat this much, or at least not from what I've known. Unless you're working on the ranch." Her eyes narrowed in suspicion and she leaned forward slightly to take a whiff of him, albeit apprehensively. "You don't even smell that sweaty," she realised. "Mace, is that water?" she asked, her voice and expression turning concerned.

"And we're only killer because we practice so much, Mik. It's hard work. And you know me, sooo hardworking," Mace said, smiling lazily. Well, hardworking at things he liked to do. The competition was something he thrived off of. However, academics was a different story.
Okay, so Mikayla was catching on, but he couldn't help but take the opportunity to fool her! She was right though, he only sweat that much when he was working on the ranch. That was heavy duty work, and his parents were always one for making him and his brothers do hard work. Of course, they usually ended up goofing off anyway and only getting half of the job done.
He backed away from Mikayla, jokingly when she started to smell him. "Whoa, there, Mik! A little too close! You're in my bubble." But then he chuckled. "Alright, you caught me. It's water. Good job, Nancy Drew." He gave a round of applause.

"Oh, yes," Mikayla teased her cousin. "Absolutely hard-working. That's my Mace! Now if only you put your hard-working skills into your homework; maybe your grades would be as good as mine." She raised her eyebrows in what she meant to be a jokingly challenging way, though it was no secret that she was very into academics and thought Mason would do well to care a bit more about his grades. She tried not to harp on about it too much, though, since she knew school was not everyone's best friend like it was hers. There was a time growing up when all she wanted to do was participate in rodeos. But then she had her accident, and school became her thing. She doubted she would have gotten anywhere on the rodeo circuit anyway.
"Well I'm glad it's just water," she said, shaking her head at him, but grinning. "However, you're going to get sick, being out here in this cold with your hair soaked like that. You know you're head is the part of your body that loses the most heat, right? Also your hands and feet. That's why they made shoes and gloves and hats." She couldn't help but mother him, even if he was older than her.

Mace rolled his eyes. It would seem that the action would be lost on Mikayla, but he was sure that she knew he was doing it, just because they knew each other so well. "But Mik, there are so much more fun things to put hard work into. Things that I actually want to do...like soccer and impressing pretty girls." He flashed a grin. She made a point of course, he could do a little better in his classes, but he did well enough to stay on the team and as bad as it sounded, that was just fine by him.
He listened to her go on about how he was going to get sick and all of that, because his hair was wet. Sure it was a bit chilly, it was the fall, but he could handle it. "Gloves and hats aren't for fall, they're for winter," he retorted, knowing that in Canada, any time was the time for gloves and hats, but still. Mace didn't like to wear them until he absolutely had to. "I'm not going to get sick, Mik. I can take care of myself. You worry about yourself, okay?" He grinned and nudged her. "So, what's new?"

She heard the sarcasm in his voice, but knew there was some truth behind his words. She knew how much her cousin loved soccer -- and girls. If he could spend the rest of his life scoring goals and scoring girls, she knew he'd be happy. And if he became an athletic celebrity, well, he could easily do both.
"There could be snow on the ground at any moment," she reminded him with a frown. Who did he think he was kidding? Canada didn't have a spring or fall. They had winter and then a couple of summer months. Still, she did not want him to get sick, and so she used her powers to bring the sun out so it would dry his hair and so he would not get sick. With the air around them now unusually warm for the time of year, she relaxed. Okay, so maybe she was mothering him, but she was also one of those mothering types who would do anything to protect those they were mothering. In this case, it was Mason. "All right, fine. I'll worry about myself," she said in an innocent tone, but she knew he would know what she was doing with her powers. The weather was pretty obvious. It was practically balmly.
"New?" she repeated, then grinned. "Oh, you know. I got an A on my practise history midterm, I have a date to the ball, and the holidays menu items are back at Tim Horton's. I just love their Christmas sprinkle donuts." She was unable to contain her glee, though it was not about the donuts at all.

"Don't remind me," Mace told Mikayla. He wasn't a huge fan of winter. He probably would hate it, if it weren't for snowboarding and skiing. Those sports made it worth while. He remembered when he and Mikayla used to go to the slopes all the time. Things had changed, she'd lost her sight. He'd always wondered if he could somehow influence the probability of her sight coming back, but never really brought it up. Was that too much for his power?
He looked up at the sky, watching as the sun peeked out and shone down on them both. He crossed his arms, but smiled a knowing smile at her. "Uh huh, worrying about yourself. That's why you just made it warm out?" He sighed. "Mik, I can take care of myself. Who is older here? Must I remind you? That's me! Muah! Me, myself and I." How many different ways could he say that?
Of course she got an A and Mace couldn't disagree with her about the holiday menu, but it was the other thing that threw him off. "What? Who?" He narrowed his eyes, suspiciously.

Mikayla smiled innocently. "Oh, but I am worrying about myself," she told him, taking a seat on the bleacher bench and folding her hands in her lap. "Maybe I'm making it warm for myself to enjoy. And maybe it's just an added perk that you won't get the flu having wet hair in December. She rolled her eyes at his 'who's the elder cousin here' rant, but a grin tugged at her lips. "Oh just leave it and sit down," she told him, patting the metal seat next to her. "Enjoy the sun while I can make it last. Unless you want the flu and want to miss your practise sessions. I hear the team is so serious they kick people off for missed practises."
She could practically feel his stare after she mentioned having a date to the ball. She sighed. "You're not about to go all protective cousin on me, are you? You never have before when it's come to guys," she pointed out. Then again, there had never been a guy before. But she bit her tongue.

"Yes, Mikayla, that is so believable, because you know, you're the most selfish person I have ever met and you're so self-absorbed that you'd use your power for that reason." Sarcasm dripped from Mace's voice and he rolled his eyes, something he couldn't stop, even if Mik couldn't see it. "Anyway, I don't get sick. I have a kickass immune system." He hadn't missed one soccer practice and he planned to keep it that way. Even if he did have the flu, he'd probably go.
He sighed and sat down next to her. "Why can't I? Do you need protecting? And just because I'm rather laidback doesn't mean that I can't be worried about the fragile state of your heart." Okay, so he was wording things a little too strongly and it was even making him laugh. Who was the guy?!

"Maybe I am selfish and self-absorbed," she began, fighting to keep her expression serious even though she wanted nothing more than to laugh. "And I can actually see and I'm lying about my lack of eyesight to get attention but inside I'm secretly laughing at everyone helping me because they're such losers and... I forgot where I was going with this," she admitted, and a bubble of laughter broke through. "Well kick-ass immunity to illness or not, it's staying warm out here for now and there's nothing you can do about it," she told him sternly. "And no, I don't need proctecting, and my heart isn't fragile!" She gaped at him, her mouth half-open in disbelief. "I was going to tell you, but now I'm not! You can wait to see for yourself at the ball. He's great, okay? Just know that. My heart isn't fragile and he's not going to break it, so don't worry. He makes me happy." She paused, then leaned her head on his shoulder for a moment. "But thank you for caring so much," she added, then hugged him and sat back up. "I don't think I've ever seen this side of you," she teased. Then again, she had never had a guy in her life in this way before.

Mace laughed at Mikayla's long joking rant. "See, that's the difference between you and me," he said when she'd finished. "I always follow through with my elaborate jokes. You forget your final destination." He grinned at her anyway though. Mikayla wasn't selfish at all. "And fine, keep it warm. I don't mind, but I am a guy and I can handle a little bit of cold." He felt the need to point that out as Mikayla looked offended over what he said.
"Mik, it's a joke, but fragile or not, I'm still looking out for you. Guys are devious. I would know." Even in trying to talk seriously with her, he couldn't help but add a little humor in there. It was just how he was wired.
"And you can count on me showing up to the ball now to figure out who this mystery guy is. If he's so wonderful, I'd like to meet him." He hadn't been planning on going to the ball, but this gave him a reason.
He hugged her back and then rolled his eyes as she pulled away. "I happen to be a very caring person, I'll have you know," he said, sticking out his tongue.

"Yeah, well," Mikayla said with a grin. "You got the funny genes in the family, I guess. Also the uber confidence," she added with a shake of her head. Mason certainly carried his head high and proud, but he was still a very caring individual, for which she was grateful for. He looked out for those about which he cared.
"Well I don't think he is as devious as you," she said. "He's very sweet, and he flusters over his words a lot. It's really endearing, and I promise you that I'm in great hands with him, though I understand your concern." She smiled gratefully, glad that she had someone to look out for her. "But please don't stalk us at the ball. I won't be able to see you, but if my date asks me why some dude is following us around..." She left the threat empty because she was not serious. She might get annoyed if Mason interrupted her date at the ball with Gabe, but she wouldn't be eternally angry or anything.
"I promise you can meet him," she said. "After the ball," she added, her voice stern.
