Aura rolled her eyes exaggeratedly at him as he explained what a bet was. "Thanks, tips, I had no idea," she drawled sarcastically. As if she didn't know what a bet was... She shook her head at him.
As she continued to tread water, she considered what she might want from him, but her kept drawing a blank. She turned the question back to him. "I asked first, Maddox," she said, mocking the way he always referred to her by her surname. His last name struck her as familiar -- more than just as Gavin's last name, but she could not place it. She brushed it off as just having known of him for a while and eyed him, curious to see what exactly he wanted if he won. "I mean, it doesn't really matter what you want because I'm going to win, but I'm curious to see what you won't be getting." She smirked at him. "What is this prize you seek?"

"Don't act dumb then and I won't assume you're dumb," Gavin pointed out, smirking in her direction. He continued treading water, turning back to the dock in the distance, the attainable goal that he'd set for himself. He'd keep his eyes on the finishing point, even if his gaze wanted to stray over to Aura most of the time, even though he couldn't see her surely beautiful bare body. Of course, that didn't mean he stopped thinking about it. He wasn't a pig, just lustful. His father had been similar, lustful but full of hatred. Although Gavin only saw him as passionate and concluded that he was passionate as well. Passionate about competition, about what he believed, etc.
She was still making a point to be extra cocky, something he couldn't hate because he was the same. He smirked when she referred to him as Maddox. He was used to it. That or Gav. Mostly Maddox. "You mean, you don't know what I would like?" He feigned a gasp. "So you're not the all knowing. I was under the impression that you knew everything." His gaze finally landed on her again, annoyed at the darkness for not letting him look at her. He could only see her face.
"You could just come back to my dorm room," he said, half-jokingly, but at the same time quite serious. "I'd like to see if you're talented in more than just swimming."

"I wasn't acting--" She cut herself off and rolled her eyes again. She was not going to let him bait her. She would just show him up when she beat him in the swim-off. And then again at every Veritas versus Spiritus swim meet.
She would have crossed her arms if possible, and so she glared instead, although there was no hatred behind the glare. Just a lack of amusement. "I never said I was all-knowing. Just better than you at swimming," she pointed out with a smug smile.
When he told her his side of the bet, her smile disappeared and her jaw dropped. "You... want to bet sex," she stated disbelievingly. Her heart pounded in her chest. Was he serious? She had been confident about winning, but if she lost... Aura bit her lip, unsure. If she backed down, that would be the same as forfeiting. The answer was simple. She would win. And she would pick a counter bet to knock him out of the water. "Fine," she said. "But if I win, which I will, you have to quit the swim team." She raised her eyebrows challengingly.

Gavin found her frustration with some sort of amusing. Yet she didn't leave or refuse to race him and that was the best part. She wouldn't back down from a challenge and although she countered everything he said with something of her own, he didn't even reply. Instead he just gave her a sultry smile as she stated what he'd declared he wanted as his prize. She said it hesitantly, as if she feared she might actually lose for a moment. That gave him satisfaction, but on the other hand, he was slightly offended. "What, you don't like the idea of having sex with me?"
He waited for her counter bet, somewhat shocked at what she'd said. "Well, that would certainly diminish any hope left for the Spiritus swim team," he pointed out. "I'm their most valuable asset." Quitting the swim team? Not a chance. "Alright, Morgan, you got yourself a deal. Now let's get this over with."

She grew flustered at his question. Did she like the idea of sex with him? No. Maybe. Yes. Maybe. Okay, yes. But she didn't want to lose to him. And how amazing would it be to wake her teammates up before morning and tell them that she made Gavin Maddox quit the Spiritus swim team? Not that Veritas needed an advantage, but it would certainly be satisfying. She ignored his question.
"It's a bet, then," she said, smiling with satisfaction when he agreed. She turned to face the dock and glanced sideways at him. "No more stalling," she told him. "Prepare to lose. And try not to cry," she couldn't help but add. She had to win.

She didn't answer his question and for some reason, that only made Gavin's smile widen as he poised himself to get ready to compete. It was as serious as any swim meet and he would treat it that way, of course he treated any competition that way. He exhaled a breath and set his eyes on the dock again. "We'll see," was all he said to Aura. He waited a moment, letting them both prepare and then shouted, "Go!" And he took off, diving under the surface to propel himself forward, resurfacing a few feet out and continuing to move himself forward with each stroke and furious kicking of his feet.

She focused her attention back to the dock, trying not to dwell too much on the stakes. She had no idea what Gavin's fastest time was, but she knew hers, and she knew her average. She was tough competition, and she would beat him. No way was she losing to anyone from Spiritus. Especially not the captain. Starting a race in the middle of the water was not something she was used to. At meets and at practise they usually dove off the edge of the pool. This would be different, but she doubted it would hurt her speed. Why are you doing this? a part of her thought. A race? That's stupid. No, it wasn't. Losing to Gavin or backing down would be stupid. She narrowed her eyes in concentration.
When Gavin yelled 'go', she ducked beneath the surface and propelled herself through the water, focusing completele on the direction the dock was in. She stayed under as long as she could, since it was easier to swim completely submerged, and when she started to need breath, she swam up to meet the surface, side-stroking her heart out and taking trained, even breaths. She caught sight of Gavin next to her and was disguntled to see that he was slightly ahead of her. She exhaled determinedly and put more effort into her swim, but just when she went to put forth another burst of speed, she stopped entirely. She watched calmly as Gavin swam further and further away, closer and closer to their finishing line. As he neared the dock, Aura detachedly wondered why she had stopped, but could also not bring herself to care.
Then the water began to smoke around her, black steaming rising up off the surface that surrounded her. She blinked and her eyes darkened to black before she was engulfed in the black smoke. When it faded away, the gentle night breeze pushing it away from her, she had sprouted black curved horns as well as a spiked tail. The tip of the spike stuck out of the water as she stood on the lake's bottom, now close enough to shore that she could touch it. She ran a tongue along her now-red lips, tasting fish, and bared her teeth, which now ended in sharp points. She flapped her black wings irritatedly, but they were useless for flying. They wouldn't get her out of the water. Huffing, she swam calmly towards the dock. She hated when her wings got wet.

Gavin was completely concentrated on obtaining his goal. The dock was getting closer and closer with each stroke. He'd seen Aura out of the corner of his eye at one point, right next to him and he knew it was going to be a close race. He knew she'd be good competition and the adrenaline coursing through him was what he craved, but when he got to the dock, finally touching it with his hand and celebrating, he realized that Aura was not beside him. He'd won, victory was his. He could claim his prize. These thoughts all ran through his head until he turned around, to see what had happened when he saw a cloud of black smoke over the lake.
"Hey, Morgan! What gives?" he shouted, but then the smoke cleared and his eyes widened at the sight before him as he fell completely silent.

Aura continued to shore until she stood by the dock. She was only standing waist-deep in the water now, but had her arms folded over her chest. Mostly because she was glaring at Gavin. "The name," she said calmly, "is Aura. The abominations who conceived me are named Morgan. I will have nothing to do with their ridiculous surname. They do not want to be associated with me, so why would I want to be associated with them?" she said matter-of-factly.
She then sniffed and looked around, saying nothing else. Her wings quivered as she shook the water off of them, stretching them out to their full length. It was an impressive sight, but since they were a part of her, Aura did not find them that fascinating. They were as much a part of her as her hair was.

Normally, Gavin would be boasting about winning the race, about how she owed him a good time and maybe concentrated on her bare chest even as she crossed her arms over it when she'd moved closer to him, her eyes narrowing. He hadn't expected her to go on a mini tirade about her last name. "Whoa, Morgan, calm down," he said, laughing a bit as if that would make things seem less weird. Come to think of it, he'd never asked what her power was, but he had sensed something dark about her. His grin finally dropped and he now bore a serious facial expression, moving away from the dock to get closer to her. He could see an outline of wings on her back and who knew what else about her had changed. It was too dark to see much of anything.
Her wings were stretched out now at full length and he took in the sight. "Impressive," he said, his voice echoing in the night. "I had a feeling there was something dark about you." Certainly not dark in his way maybe, but she seemed devilish.

She arched an eyebrow at him as he laughed and she continued to watch him silently as he waded over to her. She shot him a strange look. Most people moved away from her when she used her power, not towards her. Yet there he was, getting closer and closer with every step through the lake water.
When he commended her on her powers, she grinned, baring her pointed teeth for a moment. "Right? Usually I am not a fan of my powers, but tonight..." She shrugged, her wings moving with her. "They just turned on and became like this." She looked down at herself although the only change she really saw was her tail from the corner of her eye. She twitched it, testing out its movement, then dragged the spike along the surface of the water, watching the movement of the ripples it caused. "It is not useful for everything, though. I would probably swim a lot slower like this."

"Why not?" Gavin asked. "You don't want to embrace the darkness? What's the fun in that?" He chuckled. "I used to be like that, you know. Wanting to just ignore it, but if I was given a destructive power, why shouldn't I use it? It was given to me. A gift and who cares if it's destructive? It was given to me. I didn't choose it, so I'm going to use it, because it was meant for me. Why else would I have it?" It'd taken a while to come to terms with it, to even see things how his father saw them with his power of being able to inflict pain with his mind, but now Gavin understood. It was given to his father, and so he used it. It was simple really.
"Why fight it?" He waded closer to her now. "Although I don't recommend going to a swim meet with those wings out, no matter how good they look."

Aura considered his points. He was right: she did not choose her power. It was given to her. It had to have been given to her for a reason, right? Was it really that bad if it caused some type of destruction? "Do not let this go to your head or anything, Gavin, but I think you make a good point." She smirked at him knowingly. It would go right to his head, but that was okay. It had been his idea, so why not? Plus if she was in control, she did not have to hurt anyone. Only those who wanted to. And there was no one she wanted to. Except for her family, perhaps. Yes, she would definitely start with them.
Was she really considering this? Just letting her powers be? "Yes, I think putting them away at swim meets would be for the better. I would not want to give you an extra advantage now, would I?" She looked to her right wing, admiring it. Did they look good? She supposed they were pretty impressive. "You jealous?" she asked him, looking back at Gavin again.

Gavin couldn't help but grin. He knew he was right. He'd had time to think all of this over. "See, don't I just give the best advice? You really should listen to me more often." When it came to darkness and giving in to the temptation of evil, he wasn't far from an expert.
"Seems you gave me an advantage today," he pointed out, still moving closer to her, trying to get a better look at her wings. "Maybe, a little bit. That's kind of badass." He smirked at her. "Now...I did win the race," he reminded her.

She rolled her black eyes at him, her arms still folded over her chest. It was uncomfortable, however, and her arms were getting cold. Demon or not, temperature still affected her. She was not invincible, sadly.
At the mention of the race, Aura looked at him and sneered. "Yeah, yeah, my powers kind of gave it to you. What's your point, Gavin?" She narrowed her eyes at him. "Just going to rub it in my face? Because I've a tail you probably don't want to meet," she said, flicking her tail pointedly. Then she remembered the bet and her expression faded. "Aw, shit," she sighed. "That didn't count. My power fucking got in the way!"
