A swift wind cut across the grassy grounds of Veritas Academy, its force blowing the hood off of Talon Auburn's head. He scowled and tugged it right back onto his head, reminding himself once again that as annoying as the wind was, it was much better than being inside where most of the students were. Now that the temperature was dropping day by day due to winter's fast approach, less and less students were putting up with it. They cluttered the common area and the library and dorms, which forced relatively anti-social Talon outside.
He did not mind the cold all that much; he was content in his hoodie. But when the wind dared to knock his hood off his head, he found himself regretting his decision to sit under a maple tree amongst the still-green grass. The mild temperature and lack of the scorching summer sun was keeping the grass a nice shade of green, but Talon knew that would not last. Soon the grass would begin to brown as temperatures did... something. He wasn't sure what it was that stopped the grass from being green during the winter (apart from when it was covered in blankets of snow); it was not like Talon paid attention in his biology class.
He edged around to the other side of the tree so that his back and the tree's trunk would block the wind. As another fresh wave blew past, Talon smirked. Problem solved. He plucked up a blade of grass and tied it in a knot, then tried to tie a second knot, but the blade snapped. He scowled again and picked up a second blade and tied it to another, making a sort of grass chain. It was dull work, but hey: at least he wasn't inside in a room full overly-chatty people. And he didn't even have his iPod because it had stopped working for some reason.
After a few minutes, Talon got bored of his grass chain and tied the ends so it was in a circle, then lay it on his lap. He pulled out his iPod, hoping it would work now, but when the screen stayed blank, he sighed and chucked it a foot away from him. He could not afford to completely throw it out and get a new one, so he just glared at it for a while until he was distracted by the sound of someone walking by.

Tim had decided to test out his body warming technology today, he had been developing it for weeks, it consisted of two panels which strapped to you back which then heated and circulated the air underneath your clothing. After the hour or so of final checks he strapped it on and went for a walk in the grounds with only a t-shirt on. Tim smiled, it was working and well at that 'note to self make this air condition as well for summer' he thought Tim then noticed someone further away throwing something, because of his power Tim could sense that the something was some form of tech.
Tim approached talon "having tech problems are we, he laughed" Tim picked up the Ipod and looked at it trying to figure out the problem "ahhh, your on button is a bit faulty" The ipod flickered on "it will work until it runs out of battery, so either keep it charged or bring it to me and i can properly sort it out" Tim smiled and handed the ipod to Talon

Talon flinched when someone began to speak to him. He looked up to see a cheerful-looking 12th grader, and increased his scowl. Ugh, he thought, it's too early for laughing. It was already the evening, but Talon found that he much preferred the night time, and had only woken up a few hours ago. Luckily, it was a Sunday. Feeling protective of his iPod, he reached out for it when the older student picked it up, but was beaten to it. "Don't touch... that," he said, then faltered as he saw the screen turn on. Talon stood up and grabbed his music player from Tim's outstretched hand.
"It's been dead for over a week! I haven't had music for a week! How did you do that?" he looked at Tim, awe in his face. For a moment, he forgot his dark mood, too glad that his iPod was working now. Now he could sit wherever he wanted and not have to worry about other people, because he could play his music loudly to drown them out.

Eloise stuffed her hands in her pockets, and pulled her hood up around her head. Her blonde curls fell around her face, keeping her neck mostly warm. She wished she had put on sweatpants instead of heading out in her jeans, but she really didn't want to head back up to her room. It was cold and a bit windy, but she needed to get out of the building. Being around so many people all day took a toll on a girl who needed to focus so hard to aoid a million thoughts entering her mind: none of them her own. She began to let the mental blockade she had create down, and the thoughts from within the building became a murmur: almost white noise to her. If she let her guard down too much though, the voices would become a roar. There were a few voices more clear than the others, one rejoicing about an ipod, and the other clearly having had something to do with fixing it, but Eloise mostly ignored it.
Eloise still wasn't sure if she liked being at Veritas, though she was pretty sure she didn't. She much preferred staying with her father alone in the quiet Washington State countryside. There were too many voices here and no day went without Eloise developing a migraine. The chipper and excited thoughts of most of the other new students in her powers class made her annoyed too. They were all so happy to be somewhere that they were "accepted", but Eloise just felt more isolated.
Eloise reached the base of a tree, and looked up, deciding to climb up to a fairly low branch, and sit. Once she was up, she looked out around the grounds. Nobody was outside because of the cold, with the exception of two boys. And of course because Eloise was taking her mental block down, she could hear their thoughts clearer than anybody else. She considered putting the blockade back up, but she was just so tired from leaving it up through most of the day. She couldn't wait until people began to sleep and she could completely let go.

Tim sat down in front of Talon. "Technopath, 12 Grade" He smiled "I've seen you around, before. What grade are you in?" He laughed "well more importantly what power do you have?" Tim's heating system was working well and Tim could feel the heat was coming off him. Tim pulled out a object from his pocket, to any normal person that would look like a small black cube but to Tim it focused his power, this was something he had built at the start of last year. He usually used it when alone or in small company to allow him to practice his power control.

Talon sat back down against the tree when Tim sat, but rather than look at Tim anymore, he focused on the now-functioning iPod in his hands. He scrolled through the songs, making sure they were all there. He did not have many on it; he had only uploaded his absolute favourites.
When Tim explained how he had fixed it, Talon glanced at him with a confused frown. "Tech-what?" he asked. What the hell does that mean? Why can't people have simple names for their powers? he ranted in his mind. He was a shapeshifter. That was simple enough. He had tried calling him self a bird shapeshifter, but his powers teacher had corrected him. "You are an avian shapeshifter, Talon. Be proud." What a stupid, technical term for changing into birds.
He decided to spite that very fact by answering Tim's question with a simple, "I can turn into birds." He said it proudly, however. As much as he hated everything else about his life, he always felt better when he used his powers. "And I'm in grade ten," he added, turning his attention back to his iPod. He had already plugged his headphones back in and turned the music on, but figured it was probably really rude to put the headphones back on his ears and ignore the guy who had just saved his music.

Eloise snorted at the sarcastic thoughts of one of the boys in the distance. She agreed with him too: Avian Shapeshifter was a stupid name for a power. She would probably just call it 'turning into birds' too. It was easier. Similarly, Eloise would only say she can read minds, though her father refered to it as Telepathy, and suspected that El's power was slightly more than your average telepathy. Of course, Ella had no clue what that meant since she found absolutely none of what she experienced on a day to day basis "average".
She hated her power. She didn't consider it a gift of privilege, but more of a nuisance. Even now as she eavesdropped from afar, she hated that she could hear these peoples thoughts. They were meant to be private and unseen, but Eloise couldn't control her power to any extent. Every moment of every day was either listening to the thoughts of everybody around her, or focusing on her mental block to get rid of it all: and that was exhausting.
At least one of the boys in the distance seemed funny though, so Ella let herself listen in for a couple laughs, at least. She would enjoy her power whenever she could, since it didn't happen often.

Tims phone beeped, he pulled it out of his pocket and placed it in front of him. 'message: life-form detected' As Tim had placed it in an open area a small hologram popped up showing two blue blips which were confirmed life-forms which James had noted and one red blip high up a few meters away from them. 'brilliant its working' Tim was still putting his life-form detection system on trial and was exited to see it was working "i believe were not the only ones out here Talon" Tim turned to the area which the red dot marked 'a tree? you stupid pile of craaaa....... wait a sec' Tim concentrated, he could feel technology was near and it wasn't Talons or His. The feeling was faint though so it could be that there was someone in the tree or somebody had lost their phone in the grounds.

Talon watched with mostly disinterest as Tim pulled out his phone. His eyes widened as a holographic image appeared. "How did you..." He trailed off, remembering Tim's powers, and instead looked on in awe as the older guy announced that there was someone else nearby.
"Okay, well that's not really a mystery. We're on school grounds after all," he said sarcastically as Tim began to seek out the cause of the red blip. "Why is it a different colour? Maybe it's just an animal or something," he said with a bored shrug. What was the big deal if there was someone else out here? This guy called himself a ... what was it? Technopath? More like psychopath. Talon snorted at his own lame joke as Tim continued to approach another tree.

"No really i never guessed" Tim replied sarcastically back at Talon and turned talons i-pod off and smiled. He didn't normally get annoyed, it normally took a lot to aggravate him but somehow Talon could do it in seconds. 'i'll fix it before i leave even if he is an ungrateful oaf' Tim picked up his phone and connected to the person who was in the trees phone. Tim awaited the person to pick up the phone, he liked to be social and having a crowd of antisocial people was what he liked as a challenge. Tim may be a popular figure around school but he did prefer smaller social groups. The phone began to ring

Eloise knew her phone was going to ring before it even went off, but the sound and vibration still scared her a bit, and the small jump made her nearly fall off the branch. She considered not even bothering to answer, but decided she may as well have some fun with it. "Hello Tim," she said as she answered the phone, leaning back up against the trunk of the tree.
Eloise liked to mess with people who thought they were better, smarter, or stronger than others. Tim definitely thought himself pretty damn smart to mess with technology and try to get her down to talk to them. Well, she would talk but she wouldn't be going down. At least not any time soon. And she probably wouldn't give him any of the information he wanted.

Talon ignored Tim's antics and continued scrolling through his small iPod playlist. Everything was there, but he had missed being able to see the names. He was nearing his favourite song and planned to listen to it since he had not been able to in a while. But before his scrolling had even reached it, the device went black. Talon gaped at it, pressing the on button repeatedly, but nothing worked.
He looked up and glared at a smirking Tim. "Hey! Don't you walk away from me!" he shouted and stood up. His hood fell back onto his shoulders, but he paid it no attention. He stalked after Tim, waving his dead iPod angrily in the air. "Fix it!" he demanded, but Tim was making a phone call. Talon stood by and huffed. He would not leave the guy alone until he had his iPod back and functioning.

James turned to Talon and put the phone against his chest to block out sound "man come on i'm on the phone" He lifted the phone back up to his ear then paused 'wait i don't know this phone, How does she know my name, i don't recognise her voice!...... Wait' James smiled "i've think i know who you are, well i think i know your power" He put his phone down again and searched for 'Telepath', in a link on his phones desktop called (school records) Tim unofficially had access, he had hacked it in his first year. pulling his phone to his ear again "Hi Eloise"

"You're a smart one, aren't you?" Eloise said sarcastically into her phone. She kinda liked that she didn't need an explanation to how he knew her name. She liked that she could see everything he was going to say coming before it came out of his mouth. She didn't like how he was trying to one-up her though.
"Just so you know I don't appreciate being used as a 'challenge'," She explained. "Just because I'm in a tree doesn't make me anti social. And knowing that you're willing to go through my school files doesn't exactly make me want to talk to you," she watched as Tim and Talon walked along, still a fair distance away.
"Also you should probably fix your friend's iPod before he has an aneurysm. "

Talon rolled his eyes when Tim scolded him. It wasn't as if they guy was making an important phone call. At least, he doubted he was making an important phone call. He was probably just calling the person he thought he was tracking on his stupid device thing.
This is what Tim was doing? When he could be fixing Talon's iPod? He folded his arms angrily over his chest, glaring daggers at the older guy.
As Tim continued to talk on the phone to the girl, Talon's scowl deepened. He wished he had something to chuck at Tim's head, but all he had was his iPod, and he didn't want to break it any more than it already was. He began to scan the ground for a stick.
