"Yeah... I try to avoid that. I actually believe in that whole 'with great powers comes great responsibilty' thing," Gabe explained letting his geek show. "I'm not saying I've never done it before.... basically I could never actually be a super hero. I'm too weak." He laughed at himself
Gabe took a sip of his water, and pondered her question. He was pretty sure he knew what she was getting at, surprisingly. "Um..." he started, "I'm honestly not too sure," he said. "When I look into people's eyes they usually look back eventually. I just kind of assumed their was a correlation but..." He looked through his glasses and into her hazy brown eyes. "I don't know," he admitted with a shrug, still trying to consider what may actually happen.

Mikayla's smile softened and she nodded. "I would certainly hope so. Plus I'm sure the teachers would catch on if they know your power," she added. "And please. I doubt you're weak in whatever sense you mean. Training will increase your power control as well as your powers, and from the sound of it, your power itself is pretty incredible. I mean, think about it," she told him with a light shrug.
"Well I'm curious, Gabe," she admitted. "Try it on me. You'll never know if your powers will work on someone who can't see or who doesn't look at you unless you test it out. I'd love to help with that, even if it's originally just to satisfy my own curiosity," she grinned.

"Are you sure?" Gabe asked. "I mean... in some people it doesn't wear off," he told her. This was true, but usually it was only in girls who were exposed to his eyes multiple times and long term. It really wouldn't hurt. Would it? He would just feel really bad if he couldn't talk to Mikayla anymore because she turned into one of the crazies who was obsessed with him.
"I should clarify. There probably isn't any harm to a short term exposure. There's only a couple people who are still under its effect. One is my niece but that's because she keeps stealing my glasses every time I visit her. Though I don't mind being 'cool uncle gabe' even though her parents try to convince her I'm horrible" He face palmed for rambling again. "Anyway... I guess we could try... I just want to make sure you're actually ok with it. You might end up with awkward thoughts of me." Gabe knew a girl and a guy who were both stricken with random 'wet dreams' for a full month after being exposed to his eyes. He wondered if Mikayla could see in her dreams, and what she would possibly picture him as. Probably just a big question mark with pink sunglasses.

When he said the effects don't always wear off, Mikayla hesitated. That would not be good. As much as she did not mind him testing his power out on her, she did not want to be stuck under some charming spell of his. But then he clarified that it wouldn't harm her long-term if he only tried it once, and she relaxed.
"In that case, Gabe, I'm sure. Once isn't going to hurt me. Just try it," she told him with a comfortable smile. "But..." She motioned at the rest of the cafeteria. "Maybe here isn't the best place to. It's really loud, and that probably won't help your concentration any, am I right?" she guessed. She knew she controlled her powers best with less distraction. So she could only assume it was that way for him. But who knew? She could be wrong. She stood up, wanting to get out of the cafeteria anyway. The seats were not the most comfortable. As she stood, she cocked her head. "Awkward thoughts?" she repeated with raised eyebrows. "Maybe I shouldn't ask your to elaborate there," she laughed.

"You probably wouldn't want me to," Gabe admitted with a chuckle, taking one last bite of his dinner. "But yeah...yeah," He agreed. "Somewhere quiet would be good," he said with a nod. Even though his powers were immediate without trying, maybe he COULD get to somebody who wasn't looking if he concentrated. The concept suddenly sparked curiosity in him and he was actually ok with the little experiment.
"Are you doing anything after dinner?" he asked. "I mean... if you can't do it now, that obviously isn't a problem. I just don't have anything to do," he shrugged. "If not it gives us an excuse to talk again," he said with a charming smile, which of course went unseen, but he hoped it was reflected in the tone of his voice. But when she stood up he figured she had an idea of where to go anyway, so he stood up too, and grabbed his tray to go return it to those who washed the dishes. "Did you have a place in mind?" he asked.

"Oh, no, I meant now. My evening is free," she told him, scolding herself internally for not being more specific. Sometimes she forgot not everyone followed her train of thought, which was silly. She didn't know anyone who could read minds, after all. "If we're both free, now seems the perfect time," she said with a smile. She picked up her tray and walked with him to place it where it would be collected by the kitchen staff. She wondered for a moment if they all had powers too, or if they were just sworn to secrecy about the students' powers. Perhaps one day she would seek out that answer, but she had something more interesting to do for now.
"I didn't really have any place specific in mind. I'm guessing the commons would be getting crowded, so maybe somewhere a little quieter than that? I'm sure we could find an empty classroom somewhere," she suggested. "I know they lock the science labs, but the history and english classrooms should be unlocked."

Gabe thought for a minute. Where could they go and not be disturbed, but also not get in trouble for being there? "I know where we can go," he said simply. "And it's not all that far away." He smiled, and began to walk, knowing by now that she had the ability to follow him. "It's kind of the only place in school that I actually feel at home," he explained. "The music room"
Even if some people were there, there were large practice rooms, and rarely were all of them in use. Gabe liked to go there from time to time and play guitar or piano, write songs, and sometimes just think or take a nap. The rooms were open to anybody in the musical arts, and their guests. "Have you ever been in there?" he asked seriously, not knowing if she was participating in musical, dramatic, or visual arts.

Mikayla smiled at his suggestion. "The music room it is," she said as she followed him, listening to his footsteps as he made his way down the hall. She had been exempt from the arts classes, since she could not see to draw or take pictures or read sheet music, so she was taking extra academic courses to make up the credits. She had never been inside the music room, and felt excited by the prospect, even though she wouldn't be able to see it. That hardly mattered to her anymore. She could hear and smell and feel. That was good enough.
"I haven't, actually," she admitted. "I can't really take the arts courses. I can't read sheet music, and I can't see to draw, and drama is too much of a hassle for me, so I'm just taking all of the languages instead." The language courses were difficult as well, but learning to speak through hearing was not so bad. "I guess music is really your thing, huh?" she said, referring to how he had called the music room home. She wished she could play an instrument, but the school had not even given her the option after hearing she was blind. She supposed they had a point, but she would have liked the opportunity to try.

"Yeah," Gabe said shyly stuffing his hands in his pockets. "It's the one thing I've always felt like I'm good at." He listened to her as she explained why she wasn't taking an arts class. "Well that's kind of unfortunate," Gabe said, a sad expression on his face. "Because... I mean... you don't need to read sheet music to play music. I never read sheet music except for orchestra. I kind of have to there... but they should let you try an independent music study or something." And he was completely serious. He hated that he had to take 2 languages, let alone all of them.
"I mean I taught myself to play guitar and piano without music. I teach myself songs by ear. And you could sing if you wanted to," he pointed out. He felt like he was trying to convert her or something. He just hoped that taking all the languages was a suitable alternative for her. Gabe just couldn't imagine his life without his music. The approached the large music room, and gabe opened the door to let Mikayla in, and then stepped back in front of her to lead the way to one of the smaller practice rooms. "I mean I don't know if you would actually want to do any of that," he said with a chuckle.

"Really?" Mikayla asked, surprised to hear that. "I didn't know that was possible. I always thought it was integral to read stuff off a paper." She frowned, wondering how difficult it would be for her to learn an instrument if she couldn't see. "I'd like to learn; I don't know why the school didn't let me if you say it's possible." She pouted slightly without realising. She hated being prevented from doing things without trying.
By ear... Mikayla did a lot of things by ear and she was very good at it. She had no choice in the matter, really. The more Gabe said, the more it made sense. "Oh, I don't think I'm good singer," she said, shaking her head. She sang with her cousins, but that was just for fun. She heard his footsteps falter and slowed down, guessing they were there. When she heard a door open, she waited a moment then walked through, smiling in thanks for Gabe. "Oh, but I would. I like trying new things," she told him. "I hate it when my disability gets in the way, that's all. But if it's possible..." She trailed off with a sigh. It was too late to take a music course now. She would have to take ninth grade classes if she convinced the school to let her, and she did not want to be stuck in a class of people younger than her. It would be weird.

Gabe could see the disappointment cross her face, as if she had realized an opportunity had been snatched from beneath her. "Of course it's possible," he told her. "Haven't you ever heard of Stevie Wonder? Or Ray Charles? They were AMAZING musicians. They were known pretty much everywhere. And They were both blind." Gabe shrugged. He didn't like that the school simply hadn't tried to introduce Mikayla to an arts program. There were blind artists too. And blind actors. Why couldn't she be included?
Gabe opened another door to a smaller practice room, and ushered Mikayla inside, turning the light on so at least he could see where he was going. "There's a chair over here you can sit in if you want," he said, walking in that direction and stopping near the chair, unsure if he should guide her to it since she didn't know the layout of the music rooms. "There will be a piano in front of you though so be careful," Gabe warned, taking a seat on the piano bench which sat next to the chair.

"Oh my god," Mikayla said, then laughed as she realised how stupid she had been. "My dad has 'The Woman in Red' album and I know all the lyrics to 'I Just Called to Say I Love You'." She smacked her palm to her forehead. "I can't believe I never once thought of Stevie Wonder! Or Ray Charles." She shook her head at herself, then grinned. "I should have thought of that in grade nine when I was picking classes, huh?"
She followed him into another room, wondering where exactly in the school they were. She hadn't been to the music area before, and she already felt completely lost. She walked slowly, unsure of how the room was laid out, and followed Gabe's voice to find the chair. She felt a little silly reaching down until she found the back of the chair, but it was necessary. She took her seat and reached out the feel the side of the piano. "I played one of these when I was younger," she said with a reminiscent smile. "I was only five, though. Do you only play guitar and piano then?" she asked, curious about his musical interests. He had taught himself guitar and piano, which was really impressive. She remembered having trouble with the piano when she was younger. She had liked the way it sounded, but wanted to spend more time in the stables than in the house.

"I actually play violin and cello too," Gabe explained. "My parents wanted my brothers and I to be well rounded so we took music lessons on violin and stuff at a young age. But I switched to cello because I wanted to play an instrument that was bigger than my brothers," Gabe explained with a laugh, remembering how competitive he was with his older brothers as a kid. Of course he would never keep up, however, due to the age difference. Due to his hard work in music though, he definitely out played them on any instrument. "I try all different types of instruments when I'm bored. I just really love music," Gabe explained with a shrug. He put his fingers on the keys and played a few chords.
"It's honestly the best way I know how to express myself. If you noticed I'm not always the best with words and real people conversations. Or awkward situations... or anything like that," Gabe laughed at himself, and played a couple more chords which rang through the room for a moment.
"Do you remember anything?" Gabe asked her. "About playing piano I mean?"

Mikayla laughed at Gabe's anecdote. "And were your satisfied with the cello, then?" she asked teasingly, crossing her right leg over her left to sit more comfortable and casually on the chair. She listened to him play a few chords and smiled. She could tell just from the way he spoke that he was very passionate about music. "So you've always played music, huh? Do you have a favourite instrument?" she asked curiously. "Do you sing?"
She leaned forward so her elbows were resting on her legs, and her chin on her hands. "You're not so bad with words," she told him. "I mean you're conversing with me right now and it's going just fine," she pointed out, smiling. When he asked her about playing the piano, she shook her head. "I was really young when my parents tried putting me in lessons. I'm really outdoors-y, so everytime they wanted me to practise, I would make sure I was in the middle of giving my horse a bath or out riding with one of my cousins," she admitted. "I really only remember that the high notes are on the right, and the low on the left," she laughed. "Kind of sad, huh?"

"You know..." Gabe said in reference to Mikaylas comment about his conversation skills. "I wasn't going to ever bring it up again but this one time I'm just going to reffer to what happened when I found out you were blind." He laughed at how bad he was was at reacting to certain situations. "I'm secretly glad you couldn't see the look on my face," he said jokingly, though inside it definitely was a little bit true.
"And it's definitely not sad. It's what kids do. I hated to practice as a kid," Gabe said. "Now it's all I ever want to do but classes get in the way." He played a couple more notes and then became awkward again when asked about singing. "Uh... yeah... yeah I sing. I play piano and sing. I play guitar and sing." He only got awkward because he rarely sang in front of people after a talent show incident where he won because he wasn't wearing his glasses. He'd rather get no opinion on his singing than have people hear it and simply say its good because of his power. "But uh... yeah... Piano is my favorite. I think... maybe guitar. Not cello." He laughed at himself again.
