Marley sipped her coffee and listened to Everett's question. She was very tempted to tell him she was playing a guessing game and that she very well could have taken all his energy and left his lifeless body in the woods to rot. But she felt that was kind of dark, even for her. "I can't explain it... I can just tell. I can sense the energy levels in most things... but yeah if I take all the energy out of something it basically implodes." She had done it before, not to a person, but to fruit. She had no desire to ever do that to a person, because she could only imagine the consequences. She had accidentally come close once, and it still haunted her a bit. "And similarly if I put too much energy into something, it will explode." Marley continued, figuring that his next question might be in regards to giving something energy.

Whoa, now that was a hardcore power, even if it didn't seem like it. She could destroy things, from either taking too much energy from them or giving too much energy to them. And it could even kill a person. Similarly, Everett knew he could probably kill somebody with his power if it got too out of hand, but he had fairly good control of it. Unless of course there was a storm, in which case he stayed indoors, usually playing video games or reading comic books to get his mind off of the electricity pulsing through him.
He ate his muffin eagerly, nodding at her as crumbs spilled down the front of his Superman shirt. "Damn," was all he could mutter.

Marley shrugged, "I really only can use it when I concentrate on it though... or when I'm on an emotional high. And I've learned to control the amounts of energy fairly quickly. Seeing as the last thing I want to do is make myself spontaneously combust." She sipped at her coffee, and finished her explanation by saying, "That's why I took your energy and transferred it through me and into light. I'm pretty sure if I tried to take all that on you'd be pulling Marley chucks out of your hair for weeks."
Of course she couldn't be sure that is what would happen, but it was a valid hypothesis and half of her 9th grade year was dedicated to controling the amounts of energy she put in and took out of objects, most importantly herself.

"And you're just totally at ease with the idea that your power could make you explode?" Everett asked curiously, a little weirded out by how calm she seemed about the whole thing. He polished off his muffin and took a sip of his hot chocolate. "That's the thing with these powers, they could kill us or other people in an instant. Like seriously, who decided to trust me with electricity? That is just a bad life decision on the part of whoever bestowed this gift upon me."
He chuckled, knowing he was a bit of a disaster and that he had a little too much fun with his power when it wasn't storming, but it was just so entertaining. "Jeez, I feel like I'm electrically charged."

Marley laughed at the comment he made about not trusting himself with electricity. She had similar sentiments about her own power, but she also realized there was nothing she could do to avoid them. She shruged though, and commented on her own feelings. "No I'm pretty much ok with it..." she said. Marley had become very accepting of the fact that her power was very dangerous to herself. But a lot of things were dangerous. Marley's whole life was full of danger and pain. Exploding was the least of her worries. At least if she exploded, she wouldn't have to worry about all the bullshit she deals with on a day to day basis. "I guess I just accept it for what it is and move on," she explained... just like most other things in her life.

"Yeah, it's really all you can do," Everett agreed with a shrug. He accepted most things too. Life was just a series of patterns and it was nice that his life had some excitement in it since he acquired a power. Sometimes when he was annoyed by the storms outside or fearful of getting fried, he just thought about what it would be like to be a superhero like one of them in his comic books. He wished he could do something remarkable. "Do you ever think that maybe the schools are training us to be superheroes?" he asked randomly. "Wouldn't that be awesome?" He'd heard about missions.

"I don't want to be responsible for other people's lives," Marley said simply, before taking another sip of her coffee. "I'm barely responsible enough for my own," she added with a slight roll of her eyes. She was pretty sure that she shouldn't be trusted with her powers. But of course there was no way to take away what she had. Plus, there were horrible people in the world. There were horrible people at Veritas. Marley included. None of them should be trusted to the capacity to saving human lives - at least in Marley's opinion.
"I mean... think about the people at your school..." Marley suggested to Everett, trying to show him why it may not be as awesome as he was suggesting. "how many of them would you ACTUALLY trust to help you in a life or death situation?"

Everett had to admit that Marley had a point. Everett wouldn't trust a lot people at Spiritus. Truthfully, he thought that giving people powers often made them the opposite of super heroes, but rather selfish, sinister villains who would do anything for power because even just the smallest taste of it could make somebody crazy. It reminded him of a lot of comic books that he'd read.
She'd shattered his illusion though, of the school and how cool it could actually be. Maybe it was just corrupted. What if they had a reason to fear a lot of the people that they went to school with?
"You're right, but it was a nicer alternative," he said with a shrug as he took another sip of his hot chocolate. "You have a really negative outlook, you know that?" He frowned. He hated when people burst his bubbles and he was left thinking about all that was wrong with humanity.

Marley gave a dry laugh. Negative? She thought that was obvious upon inspection. Marley was never an upbeat, positive person because she never had anything to be upbeat or positive about. As soon as she was hopeful, her world shattered. And as soon as she felt like something was going right, it proved to be wrong, and hurt her in more ways than one.
"Trust me," she said looking at Everett from her one uncovered eye, and through her bangs from the other. "I know. I'm one the most pessimistic bitches out there." She sighed, and took another drink of her coffee and another bite of her muffin. She didn't expect Everett to understand or even want to understand. Nobody ever cared.

"Sorry," Everett offered with a shrug. "It's just that...powers are supposed to make us special. Maybe we're supposed to be heroes. But nobody sees it that way. They see it as a way to get ahead of everyone else or to selfishly use it to their own advantage." It was sad really and now that he was thinking about it and it wasn't his ideal perfect superhero tale, he was becoming annoyed by reality.
"I'm an optimist, until someone like you comes along." He put his head down on the table, almost knocking over the cup of hot chocolate that was in front of him. What if there were evil people at Spiritus and Veritas?

"Sorry," Marley muttered, but she barely meant it. If he were really an optimist he wouldn't let her pessimism get him down. She had met extreme optimists and they never stuck around long enough to drink a coffee and eat a muffin. He would have left her alone at first sight.
"you don't have to get so sad about it you know," she teased him a bit. "You can still be superman for halloween." She hoped she wasn't hitting too much of a sore spot. He clearly cared deeply about his little comicbook hobby. "But seriously you're probably a good enough person to help others. Me? I'm just trying to survive."

Everett shrugged and chuckled slightly at her comment about him still being able to be a superhero for Halloween. "Thanks, but I just mean that it's really messed up that we are given these powers, we are chosen for some reason and people either don't want them or want to use them to their own benefit. What happened to super hero morals?" He sighed. "And I doubt my power could help much of anybody. I mean, electricity would be useful to fight evil with, but I mean, I'm sure causing power outages and shocking people when I touch them isn't going to help much of anybody." He'd been told that he could manifest lightning if he tried hard enough with his powers, but he was too afraid of frying himself.
"Don't you ever think of there being something...I don't know...fishy about the schools? Like we're meant for a bigger purpose and we just don't know it yet?" Maybe it was just the gears in his mind turning too much.

Marley shrugged, "I guess..." she said, thinking about it. But then again, Marley found something fishy about every school she ever attended. And every person she's ever lived with, been put in contact with. But she couldn't deny that Everett had some sort of point lying beneath the rambling. "I mean... I don't fucking know why else they'd create special schools for kids with special powers in the middle of the fucking woods in Canada." She shrugged. She had no explanation, but there was probably some sort of motive for bringing all these kids together.
"What do you think your greater purpose could possibly be?" Marley asked curiously, since she didn't believe she could possibly have one. Most of her life was shadowed by people telling her and treating her like she was worthless. So she pretty much accepted it to be true. Sometimes, when people challenged that, she couldn't help but pry a little.

"That's what I mean," Everett said, sliding away his hot chocolate after he finished it. "We're all gathered at these two schools. It's like...they're trying to help us...but maybe there's another reason. I don't know. Most people tell me that my thoughts don't make sense and my imagination is too wild, but I think it could be true."
"My greater purpose?" He raised an eyebrow, thinking. "I dunno. I mean, I guess it could be anything, but I'd like to think that I have some sort of bigger purpose than taking up space and causing power outages in the dorms." He shrugged his shoulders.

Marley shrugged at the first part. She didn't think the idea was too far fetched, actually. But she wasn't sure she liked the idea either. She couldn't help but laugh at that last part though. "I'm sure they just love when you blow the power in the dorms," she stated. "Probably as much as they like it when I start foodfights in the caferteria without looking up," Marley said with a smug grin. They still didn't know who started it, which was pretty cool. Marley figured that she would be found eventually, but she wasn't concerned.
"I hope I have a greater purpose than THAT," she said referring to the food fights. "And you know... vandalization and scaring the shit out of little blonde boys in lightning storms." She shot a teasing smile in his direction before taking another bite of her muffin.
